Acing Airborne Aesthetics: Staying Fresh on Long-Haul Flights (Skincare Edition)

Ever marvelled at those who step off a long flight looking like they've just came out of a spa rather than a plane? Glowing skin post-landing isn't just luck—it's a strategy. In-flight air is notoriously dry, and even the loveliest complexion can wilt under its influence.

I’m no stranger to the skies, regularly jetting to distant locales of Europe, Asia, and South Africa. It's a battle against the cabin's arid air to prevent my skin from desiccating, but I've got my tactics down pat.
Let’s set the record straight: You might not fool anyone into thinking you teleported rather than flew, but these tips will have you touching down feeling—and maybe even looking—like a rockstar.
Before I deep dive into this, I want to note that I have had eczema all my life, so naturally I have extremely sensitive skin. I am very careful of the products I use but will swear by the ones that I have found to be amazing. That said, the products I recommend here are based on personal use and nothing else. If it hasn't won over my skin, it won't make my list!

Start with a Clean Slate
Using facial wipes mid-flight is a non-negotiable. It's a travel essential for cleansing your skin before the skincare routine. They're gentler than navigating the airplane lavatory for a wash.
Clear way the day's grime with a gentle wipe. Air pollution and makeup - even if it's invisible - accumulate, demanding a clean sweep.
For the softest cleanse, I trust Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleansing Cloths.
For a wallet-friendly choice that doesn't skimp on quality, Burt's Bees facial wipes come to the rescue.
Mist for Moisture
I always carry a petite facial mist spray to keep my skin from drying out. It keeps my skin dewy and refreshed, especially in the arid cabin air. Not a must, but a definite plus for hydration.
Favourite facial mist sprays:
Caudalie Grape Water Moisturizing Face Mist is refreshing and light.
Aue Thermale Avene Thermal Spring Water Facial Mist offers a soothing touch.
La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water Face Mist provides an invigorating spritz.
I've honestly found minimal differences between these face mists. It's personal preference if you have a brand favourite or loyalty. I tend to purchase any one of these when it's on sale, but I always have one in my bag!
Mask Magic
Never underestimate the power of a good face mask at 30,000 feet. It's key to replenishing your skin's moisture.
If you aren't shy and don't mind drawing a few stares with a sheet mask, my top picks are:
Dr.Jart+ Vita Hydra Solution Mask is deeply hydrating and wallet-friendly.
Skin Laundry Facial Sheet Mask is like magic, leaving skin plump and super hydrated.
For a bit more subtlety, LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask works like a charm without drawing attention.
Leave it on for 20-30 minutes - relax and watch a movie, read a book, or take a quick nap.
*Important: do not wash it off with water. Remove the mask and massage the remaining product in a slow and circular motion around your face and neck to allow your skin to absorb it. C’mon, this stuff isn’t cheap, so let’s not waste any of it!
Serious About Serum
After masking, a serum is your ally in sealing in that precious moisture and repairing the skin.
Lancome Advanced Genifique is a rejuvenation star. This has been on rotation in my skincare routine for the last decade.
COSRX Snail Mucin Essence is a TikTok favourite, but it truly soothes and repairs.
d’Alba Italian White Truffle First Spray Serum is luxe and effective.
Glow Recipe Vitamin C Serum brightens and revitalises.
Cream Over Lotion
Seal the deal with a rich face cream; it's your skin's amour against the recycled air and provides long lasting hydration better than lotion.
La Roche-Posay Face Moisturizer locks in moisture for hours.
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream is a classic.
Creme de La Mer Moisturizing Creme is luxurious and pricey, but worth every penny.
Lip Service
For lips, nothing beats LANEIGE's Lip Sleeping Mask for plush hydration.
No lip balm? Regular Vaseline works wonders too! Speaking of....
Vaseline: The All-Rounder
Whilst Vaseline can feel a tad greasy, it's extremely versatile. It's great as a lip balm replacement, but also slather it wherever you're feeling dry. It's a wondrous all-over-body hydration. I'm not a big van of Vaseline most of the time because of the sticky feeling but it's my lifesaver on flights and when I'm travelling to places with dry weather.
Eye Relief
Use eye drops to fend off dryness, especially if you wear contact lenses. Simple and effective eye drops can brighten up those tired eyes.
Dental Care on the Go
Maintain oral hygiene with a Colgate Wisp or mouthwash. It's a lot easier than brushing in the tiny lavatory sink. But if you prefer regular brushing and forgot your toothbrush, don't be shy to ask the cabin crew.
For the Ladies,
Stay Fresh Down Under
Pantyliners and wipes are a discreet way to feel shower-fresh. A little personal wipe-down can go a long way in feeling human after hours aloft.
Quench your Thirst
Staying hydrated on the outside is equally as important as staying hydrated on the inside. This is a non-negotiable! WATER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! Skip the airplane tap and opt for bottled water due to cleanliness concerns.
If you know you're going to sleep for a bit and won't be waking up to drink water, I highly recommend elevating your hydration game with electrolytes:
Steer clear of alcohol and caffeinated drinks. They may be free but will only dehydrate you further. Instead, savour the sweetness an apple juice.
I hope with these tips, you'll descend from the skies feeling like a rockstar. Happy Travels! x
