Embarking on a journey when you have mobility challenges can indeed seem daunting. But the true essence of travel – the thrill of new experiences and the treasure trove of memories – makes every ounce of effort worth it. If you, or someone you hold dear, find mobility a challenge, I empathise deeply with the longing for hassle-free adventures.

Inspired by my mother, who herself navigates these challenges, I've become attuned to the nuances of accessible travel. It's become second nature for me to assess each new place with an eye for its wheelchair-friendliness, all hoping to share these experiences with her.
Here are some standout destinations that are not just locations on a map, but beacons of inclusivity for those with wheels:
Spain
The warmth of Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid goes beyond the climate; it's in the patient taxi drivers assisting with wheelchairs, the smooth park pathways, and the cobblestone-free streets. Whilst the bustling tourist spots like Las Ramblas and the Mercato de La Boqueria can be challenging, historical treasures like La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell consider accessibility with thoughtful amenities and discounted access, making the cultural immersion seamless.
*Tip: Visit the attraction's website to purchase your admission tickets before arrival. Many attractions allow for a complimentary ticket for the accompanying person. So if it's just 2 of you, it's basically buy one get one free.
Australia
Cities like Sydney and Melbourne exemplify accessibility. Their broad walkways liberate you from the confines of public transport, though when needed, their transit systems (trains, buses, and ferries) with spacious aisles and ramps are at the ready. And if adventures beckon, Australia's trails and beaches welcome you with open arms, as does the multitude of sensory experiences crafted for all. Australia’s official tourism website provides numerous resources to make it easy to plan and visit.
South Africa
Cape Town might not boast an intricate public transport system, but it compensates with its car-friendly explorations. Smooth rides along the V&A Waterfront or serene drives through the verdant winefarms are just a prelude to the crown jewel – a Kruger National Park safari. Here, the splendour of the wild unfolds before you, all from the comfort of your safari jeep.
Vienna
This historic city might be known for its timeless charm, but it’s the modern commitment to being “barrier-free” that truly impresses. Flat, well-maintained pavements, accessible public transport, and welcoming tourist sites with ramps and lifts – Vienna is a model of a city that honours its past while embracing inclusivity.
Singapore
In Singapore, sleek MRT systems, taxis, and ride-hailing services cater adeptly to those with mobility needs. The city’s pavements are as welcoming as its locals, with smooth curb drops accentuating the tourist-friendly areas. Attractions like Gardens by the Bay, the Singapore Zoo, and Marina Bay Sands are not just accessible as they offer rental for wheelchairs and electric scooters but are active invitations to explore and delight.
Canada
The heart of Canadian inclusivity beats with the rhythm of the Accessible Canada Act, a commitment to a barrier-free nation by 2040. Whilst natural wonders like Banff might still present challenges, they are making efforts to make parks, trails, and other adaptive sports more accessible. The urban landscapes of Toronto and Montreal are exemplary with their public transit systems and curb ramps paving the way for effortless exploration.
USA
The vastness of the US is matched by its diversity in accessibility. Each city continues to make strides in breaking down barriers and cultivating an environment where everyone can thrive and explore with ease. Cities like Las Vegas epitomise wheelchair friendliness, whilst Seattle, Orlando, Denver, Boston, Washington D.C., and Portland pave the way for barrier-free experiences, embracing both the beauty of their locales and the diverse needs of their inhabitants. It breaks my heart that I could not add NYC to this list, but maybe one day!
Cruises
Albeit not a destination, cruises have become a beacon of relaxation and adventure on the seas for everyone, including travellers with mobility challenges. Modern cruise ships are floating cities designed with accessibility in mind, offering features such as spacious cabins with wide doorways, roll-in showers, and accessible balconies. From embarking to disembarking, cruise lines assist and prioritise accessibility in entertainment venues, dining areas, and on excursions. With itineraries that whisk you away to various destinations, cruising offers the joy of travel without the need to frequently pack and unpack. Cruises are a great option to see the world without leaving the ship. Always check with the cruise line for specific services and ensure that the ports on your itinerary can accommodate your accessibility needs. This way, the majestic oceans and the wonders they lead to are within your reach, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey across the high seas.
Travelling to bustling metropolises like Hong Kong, New York City and many European cities offers a unique blend of modern dynamism and timeless charm. However, these cities' historical infrastructure can present certain hurdles. Narrow streets lined with cobblestones and the sporadic presence of ramps and elevators sometimes pose a challenge to accessibility. Whilst these cities are fervently working towards becoming more inclusive and barrier-free, my personal experiences have shown that navigating them with my mum requires additional planning and effort. Their commitment to improvement is evident, and with time, I am optimistic that they will become as welcoming as they are enchanting.
Remember, these insights come from personal experiences, and conditions may change, so always check the latest information before you travel. But most importantly, don’t let anything hold you back from experiencing the wonders our world has to offer. Your next great adventure awaits, and it can be as smooth as the pavement before you. Happy Travels! xx
