Navigating the Unspoken Lessons of Expat Life: What You Need to Know

Embarking on life as an expat was a leap into the unknown for me, especially doing it solo and heading to a bustling metropolis like Hong Kong. With some research and anecdotes from expat friends under my belt, I felt somewhat prepared. Yet, as with any grand adventure, the most profound lessons emerged in the thick of the experience.

Let me share some insights from living abroad that often remain unspoken:

Redefining Independence

Back in New York, my independence was interlaced with a safety net of familiar faces and places. It taught me self-reliance. But Hong Kong schooled me in true independence. When stripped of my comfort zone, I discovered a deeper layer of self-sufficiency. It's one thing to navigate your hometown, quite another to assert yourself among strangers in a new city. Each step was a lesson in resourcefulness.

Commitment Over Retreat

The possibility of a retreat can undermine resilience. "If I don't like it here and it's too hard, I can always go home!" shouldn't be an option. It was the unwavering decision to stick it out in Hong Kong that became the bedrock of my success. By not giving myself an out, I found ways to thrive.

Homesickness

It’s a complex ache for the familiar, intensified during personal milestones. I learned that homesickness isn’t just about missing home—it's about missing shared experiences with loved ones. I missed my dad's 60th birthday, my friend's wedding, the birth of my friend's first baby and the list goes on. It's heartbreaking but it comes with the territory when living 16 hours away.

Pride and Doubt

There’s a rollercoaster of emotions in expat life. There's pride in saying, "I did this, I moved across the world!" that can swiftly shift to "Why am I doing this?" It's a duality that tests and affirms your resolve.

Natural Conversations

The art of conversation with new people evolves from an intimidating prospect to a rewarding routine. The initial awkwardness paves the way to unexpected friendships and opportunities. Talking to strangers becomes second nature as time passes.

Building Friendships

I found that connections come easily, but forging true friendships demand more. They require effort, patience, compatibility, and shared experiences to move from pleasant exchanges to meaningful relationships.

Selective Relationships

Not all connections are meant to blossom into friendships. When you're new to a place and eager to make friends, we tend to say yes to every invite and all group chats. After a while, it gets exhausting and disheartening when one person or group doesn't work out. I learnt to invest in people who reciprocate my energy and commitment, distinguishing temporary acquaintances from lifelong friends.

Staying Connected

The labour of love that is maintaining long-distance friendships is indispensable. The effort to bridge the gap across time zones becomes a lifeline of support and shared history. With the abundance of social media platforms, it's become a lot easier to stay connected and "in the know" of what's happening in each other's lives, but it takes more than just sending a meme or liking a post to maintain a relationship. It takes a proper phone call, a thoughtful text message, and maybe even a surprise care package delivered.

Navigating Transience

In a city where people come and go, forming close bonds can lead to hard goodbyes. It can be a struggle, especially if you grapple with feelings of abandonment. But it's taught me resilience and the value of being present in relationships, however brief they may be. But after the sad feelings pass, there's a realisation that I didn't lose a friend, I just have a friend in another country and another reason to travel there.

Perceptions of America

The U.S. often exists as an idea abroad and that idea can be subject to criticism. I encountered strong views about American culture, education, healthcare and politics, often distinct from opinion about Americans themselves. The enlightening dialogues have challenged me to think critically about my homeland and defend it when necessary.

Understanding 'Americanism'

This was about seeing how American identity is perceived through the eyes of the world. It's been a thought-provoking reflection on cultural influence and stereotypes.

Cultural Diversity

From accents to customs, the exposure to a spectrum of cultures has been one of the richest rewards. Each interaction has been a chapter in my ongoing education in global diversity. Hong Kong is special in this way, where the expat community is small and tight, but extremely diverse. I would walk into a bar and hear all sorts of accents in one room, which is very different from the States and Canada where we all pretty much have similar American accents.

Cherishing the Unattainable

The realisation of what you take for granted hits hard when you can't find it abroad. You'll miss certain comforts of home that are inaccessible or prohibitively expensive abroad. Whether it’s your favourite snack or an everyday convenience, its absence is felt deeply.

Perception vs. Reality

Preconceptions of Hong Kong's advanced financial services shattered when faced with outdated practices like paper forms and chops (aka official stamps). It's a reminder that a city's international image doesn't always align with daily realities. This isn't to say they might not be advanced in other aspects, such as HK has same day money transfers between different banks whilst in the States, it still takes a couple business days to clear a transaction.

Language Barriers

Encountering a language barrier can range from mildly inconvenient to deeply frustrating. It's a humbling hurdle that tests patience and often leads to creative communication.

Career Reinvention

Adapting to a new professional environment is a formidable task. Learning to navigate a new market, understanding different work cultures (you mean people don't live to work but rather work to live?), and establishing oneself anew is a lesson in fortitude and flexibility. It's a learning curve, but it's rewarding to take with you into your future journeys.
